Gym Tip #7 Band Pull Aparts

Stronger Posture: The Power of Band Pull-Aparts

Stronger Posture: The Power of Band Pull-Aparts

When it comes to building a strong upper back, resistance bands are a highly effective and versatile tool in the gym.

In our latest Gym Tip, we demonstrate how to perform band pull-aparts to improve your upper body strength and posture.

Why Do Band Pull-Aparts?

For those who spend all day driving or sitting at an office desk, it is easy to become hunched forward. The band pull-apart helps counter this by pulling your posture upright.

The Setup & Execution

Whether you are just starting out or looking for a new way to improve your shoulder stability, getting the setup right is key:

  • The Foundation: Start with your arms extended out in front of your chest with a slight bend in your elbows.
  • The Movement: Slowly pull the band apart until it taps your chest, squeezing your shoulder blades together. Control your tempo as you slowly reach straight back out in front.
  • Progression: To add a challenge, try balancing on one foot or dropping into a lunge position to engage your hamstrings, glutes, and abs at the same time.

Essential Coaching Cues for Success

To ensure you are performing the movement effectively, keep these cues in mind:

  • Shoulder Position: Keep your shoulders pulled back and down.
  • Spinal Alignment: Stand tall and keep your head neutral with your spine.
  • Head Position: Maintain a soft gaze straight out in front of you, or slightly down at the floor.

By incorporating these band pull-aparts into your routine, you are building a stronger back and getting more out of your time in the gym.
